What is an artist book 'Artists have illustrated the words of others in books since the advent of the printed book itself in the 1400s, the book as art object is a product of the 20th century. In Europe from the 1950s, artists were experimenting with the book format, making books with unique printing and bindings, such as slits or holes cut through the pages and unique shapes for the binding or boxing. Artists used the book format to create narratives to deal with difficult or emotional issues, and some used it as a cheap, portable way to make the artwork available to a broader public than the gallery and museum world allowed.'
I make artist books because I am interested and love books. It is a fascinating medium as it is about the creation of an object that can tell a story in many shapes and sizes. The book can be a limited, hand printed edition or a one off or a longer run of some particular idea
During my time as a beekeeper my work is often a response to the history and mythology around these remarkable insects. The emerging book can be a sculptural object which can unfold in many ways. Recently experimenting with Tetra Pak intaglio printmaking. Included here is The Box of Birds all made from one sheet of A2 paper.
One of the versions the Dry Stone Wall book
Tunnel Book based on the tradition of telling the bees about anything important that has happened in the beekeepers life. The book is based on the hive and the viewer peers through the layers to see the bees at work.
